ABOUT ME

Hello! My name is Oliver Armstrong and I am a proud Tasmanian. My love for the environment stems from my grandmother’s deep connection with the bush. Growing up, I was exposed to many of her stories that included climbing many Tasmanian Abels before there were proper tracks along with encounters with Deny King in the South West. From a young age, I idolised her and shared in her appreciation for these wild places.

I have a keen passion for running, both in long distance trail races and road marathons and in 2019 I raced in a 250km ultra marathon across Sri Lanka. I have also set age group Australian records for ultra running, completing 192km’s in 24hrs and setting the fastest 100 mile run for a male under 25 years of age. I love to hike having spent considerable amounts of time exploring backcountry tracks across Tasmania, mainland Australia, NZ and the Sub-Antarctic. Outside of this, I fill my days surfing, sailing and scuba diving.

I use photography to capture the essence of the landscapes that have shaped me. Although it is still in its early stages, I want to use this website to help people better understand what our options are when it comes to conservation. I will be interviewing people from various different angles of the conservation space and writing articles to share their knowledge. Hopefully these articles will empower people to work out where they can make personal changes, zero in on career choices or engage with community groups when it comes to climate change and conservation. I, myself, have much learn and look forward to taking inspiration from the interesting, empowering and environmentally conscious people out there that I meet on my travels.

Over the next four months I will be embarking on the Pacific Crest Trail. Stretching over 4,270 km from the border of Mexico to the Border of Canada, this iconic trail traverses some of North America’s finest landscapes, from the sun-drenched deserts of Southern California to the rugged peaks of the Pacific Northwest. My plan is to develop my skills, advocate for species, encourage exploration and empower environmental leadership amongst those I come across. But above all, I want to form my own connection with the trail, so that someday in the future I will have stories that inspire my grandchildren in a similar way that my Grandmother’s stories inspired me.
